They had dinner on the porch as each evening's light turned lavender-gray and night moved in from the sea. Chamber music floated from the open windows into the velvet darkness. Dr. Kreistein had given Richard and Ellen a set of Mozart recordings to thank them for feeding him every evening. Often Helga carried his lunch on a tray through the woods.

For Slally those halcyon days would be forever symbolized by two memories—the announcement and the party.

Richard and Ellen had contracted a new understanding in the aftermath of their worst quarrel. Both of them knew how close they had come to losing each other. They were restrained and at peace with themselves.

Dr. Kreistein was baffled. Every morning Bentley came over to his house. They sat in the musty library and talked about Bentley's life before he was eight. The old man was probing through Bentley's childhood memories and daydreams, trying to discover the darkest core of dread within the boy. But he could see no pattern that would lead him to what Bentley feared the most. He had questioned him about his handicap, his relationship with his unforthcoming father, feelings about other children, his nightmares. Bentley seemed to have an inner resilence that made him impervious to trauma.

One sunny morning Dr. Kreistein sat, hands folded over his stomach, watching the boy on the window seat. Bentley was poking at a wasp that buzzed frantically up and down the window screen.
